Supermarket Project

DevelopSpringfield is working to bring a full-line grocery store to the under-served Mason Square area of the City alongside community based partners such as the Mason Square Food Justice Initiative and the Mason Square Health Task Force.

Development of a full-service grocery in the area is a recommendation of the 2008 State Street Corridor Improvement Program and the 2012 Rebuild Springfield Plan.  The project would help address health inequities in surrounding neighborhoods by providing access to fresh, healthy foods, while also providing jobs and serving as a catalyst for additional private investment and development.

The Mason Square Supermarket is a transformative neighborhood initiative that will bring a full line 40,000 to 45,000 square foot supermarket to an area within the City of Springfield defined by high rates of food insecurity, hunger, poverty and unemployment. The Mason Square area was identified as a food desert in 2008. The Mason Square Food Justice Initiative surveyed over 1,600 residents to define the food access needs in this district, and over 800 residents signed a petition calling for equitable food access. Residents want a full line, centrally located grocery store in Mason Square that eliminates the need to leave the area to purchase healthy and culturally appropriate foods, and that creates local jobs.

The supermarket site consists of about 5 acres that have been consolidated by DevelopSpringfield (all required lots are purchased or under agreement). The block enjoys high visibility from State Street, a major travel corridor, as well as two high traffic count intersections. Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) and the Springfield Technology Park (an office park located at the former Springfield Armory) are both immediately across State Street from the proposed site. The planning and design process has been initiated, with concept designs now completed and all environmental site assessments have been completed. A store operator is being identified. Funding sources are being actively identified and pursued by DevelopSpringfield and its project partners.

The Mason Square Supermarket is at the heart of the recently completed Federal Hill Redevelopment Vision Plan. Click here to link to learn more about the Federal Hill Redevelopment Vision Plan.
